A landmark of Portland cinema history, The Clinton Street Theater is one of the oldest operating moviehouses in the United States.
Opening in 1915 as the Clinton, the theater became the 26th Avenue Theatre in 1945 and the Encore in 1969. In 1976 it reverted to its original name.
Famous for its long-standing exhibition of the Rocky Horror Picture Show, the theater is currently a magnet for independent / revival films.
In Fall of 2003, the Clinton Street Theater was purchased by Seth and Nicola Sonstein. It has a revolving cast of volunteers and film freaks who enjoy helping support it’s existence.

Experiences
I went to see Diary of the Dead last Saturday night at the Clinton Street Theater. I enjoyed the film and the theater, as always. I’ve always liked the Clinton Street Theater but it definitely became more appealing once food and drinks were offered. Being connected to Clinton Street Brewing means that there’s some really good beer available to enjoy while taking in a movie. My only complaints were that the menu of Clinton Street Brewing has been reduced to just pizza instead of the small menu offered previously and that the sound system of the theater could use some work. Still, I can’t say I’ve ever had a bad time at this theater… except for 1 really terrible movie I got talked into seeing.
